THE Department of Energy (DoE) is hoping to resolve the persistent grid alerts experienced in the Visayas and Mindanao before the end of the year, adding that it plans to deploy power barges and battery energy storage systems.

“The barges will be coming in,” Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin said on the sidelines of an event on Thursday.
The Visayas grid has been placed under red alert 30 times and yellow alert 93 times. The Mindanao grid has experienced 3 red alerts and 10 yellow alerts. The shortage of power available to the grid was blamed on the shutdown of several power plants and other plants running on derated capacity.
